COMPOSATHON
Multicultural Mathematics
December 8th, 2004

Directions:  This exercise is designed to give you practice in using musical structure.  The plan is that each team will pick patterns out of a hat.  Together, you will plan a composition that uses all these patterns plus other patterns that you write yourself.  Here are the rules...

  1. You must use all the patterns I give you.  In addition, you can make up any number of patterns of your own.
  2. You must choose a measure length for your composition.
  3. The composition must be at least 64 measures long.  In addition, its length should be a multiple of the measure length.  For example, if I choose the measure to be 8 beats long, the composition must be at least 512 beats long.
  4. Every instrument should have the same number of beats in its part.
At the end of the period, each group will play its composition for the class.  Good luck!
